發現台灣獼猴是台灣特有的種類、並且為牠命名學名的人，是十九世紀當時擔任英國派駐台灣副領事的自然學家史溫侯（Robert Swinhoe）。史溫侯在1863年發表一篇報告『福爾摩沙哺乳動物(On the Mammals of Formosa)』（Swinhoe, R. 1863("1862"). On the mammals of the island of Formosa (China). Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1862:347-365,pl.42）
