植物體呈片狀，此種最明顯的特徵在其片狀體先端的腹面會產生紫色至暗紅色的總苞(用來保護藏卵器)。氣孔拱形。氣室一層，內有同化絲。腹鱗片紫色；附屬物三角形。

植物體匍匐，有許多直立的小枝。葉乾燥時強烈捲曲；枝葉線狀至卵狀披針形；葉尖稍為漸尖。葉細胞圓方形，多疣。蒴帽具毛。內蒴齒線形至披針形。
