葉片在乾燥時兩邊會向內捲曲，形成管狀，可在照片右下角稍微乾燥的地方發現這個現象。

右邊為下雨過後，淋到雨的八齒苔呈現綠色；左邊則為未淋到雨的，呈現白色帶有絲綢的光澤。

現在學名一般用Solmsiella biseriata (Austin) Steere 。植物體腹面觀，整體看起來很像Lejeuneaceae植物，照片中可以見到褐色的根為多細胞組成，則是moss的特徵。
